It's probably safe to say that you've never seen anything like a Matmos
and So Percusion show, unless of course you've seen someone else play a
cactus before. Throw in the fact that the show was at the Loft, and
it's pretty much like having a science fair at a wine tasting with a
troupe of kick ass DJs and a movie screen to further the ambience. And
maybe somebody spiked the wine with some form of hallucinogen and...
well, let's just say it was unique. There was a lot of movement and
tweaking and experimenting from the guys behind the controls and the
instruments, and the otherworldly sonic creations reflected the static
interaction between men and sound. Sometimes the crowd moved to the
beat, other times they stood mesmerized as if they'd wandered into a
gallery from another planet. Sometimes strange and marvelous things
happen right before your very eyes, and instead of trying to explain it,
label it, understand it, or even judge it, it's usually best to stand
back and enjoy it for whatever it is. And maybe a glass of wine would
be the icing on the cake.
