My First Solo Record

Ok so I have decided to make a record. After years – yes years – I have made the commitment to finishing a record of my own. For some reason, I have no problem helping others get theirs done. But when it comes to my own, I start something, feel good about it, hate, re-write it, record it, and then hate it again. If only you heard what my wife does on a daily basis– my record will be like this, and will be like that. I get a new idea every time I hear something by the Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Dylan, and so on... you get my drift. It is hard to make your own record. The hardest thing I know of. In fact, it’s so hard that I have never made one.

On Producers

What do you do when are in a rut and you feel like you can’t get out? You call a friend. You vent, telling them all about your problems – maybe they can offer a piece of advice or some reassuring words – or maybe they just listen. What do you do when you have some good songs and all of the skills and tools you need to see them to completion, but just can’t get it done? You get a producer. Problem - I am a producer. How do you produce a producer? In my case, you call a man who has nothing to do with the music business. Enter my friend Mike - We have known each other since we were kids, playing in our high school jazz band together. I always played behind the beat, with my noodling Phish guitar hero BS, while Mike was most undoubted in ... read more >

Back to School

When my wife got into the nursing program at MSU we rented an apartment and setup shop there for the year. I brought enough equipment to continue working on my record, and get some on location work. Cool, a college town…. Again. Fortunately we got there early in the summertime and got to experience Bozeman in the quiet times, before the puke-on-shoes Fall rush. Have you figured out that I like hyphens? Quiet times also lead to a lot of thinking. Couple that with a small basement apartment with no sunlight and you’ve got a recipe for psychosis…. For a recording engineer, a fantastic dream space. Imagine my dreams crushed when I found out that my upstairs neighbors apparently wears tap shoes for a living, and the circuit breaker for the... read more >

Tracking Drums

I love Brian Wright. So does my wife. She calls him her ‘favorite friend of mine’…. Not to be confused with ‘best friend of mine’. He is a quirky man, with a quirky taste for the finer things in life, like cherry-essence-prunes. Edit I just got confirmation from Brian that cherry-essence-prunes are out, and almonds are in…. Even though I caught him shamelessly promoting Popchips on Facebook. I guess drumming isn’t that good of a profession. I love Brian Wright…. He is the best drummer I know, and I may or may not have woken up next to a lot of drummers in my life. I first met Brian while recording a SnowGhost project for Erick Messler. Then we went on to record session for two of his other million bands, Carcrashlander and Grav... read more >
