CarCrashLander: The Session

We had already gotten a taste of CarCrashLander from their participation in the Erick Messler sessions. In between recording Erick’s songs, Cory and Brian played some of their own compositions, which I personally felt were very strong. Their control of dynamics and musical imaginations were some of finest I’d worked with. After some touring and an album release, CarCrashLander decided that they would make the trek out to SnowGhost to do their very own, official session, with six new songs. As an added bonus, Jess Wright - not only Brian’s wife but a fantastic woodwind musician - would accompany them on this trip.
This one was a little more organized than our previous sessions, as we were now implementing a pre-production process, where the artists send us rough demos and descriptions of their arrangements. This allows us to get to know the songs, and evaluate whether or not they could be pulled off in a three-day session. Not wanting to be too stifling, we went with some songs that were pretty straight ahead in their arrangement, and some that were more improvisational. This let us be productive, while maintaining the spontaneity that makes our sessions so popular with artists. Cory’s tunes, all arranged on his laptop, ranged from droney to poppy. I was excited because the material was so diverse and would need a varied approach to recording over the course of a few days.
